Mission
AED
is committed to improving people's lives by working
collaboratively to solve critical social problems
in the United States and throughout the world. Major
areas of focus include health, education, youth and
leadership development and the environment.
History
Established as a nonprofit organization in 1961 focusing on U.S. higher education management, AED moved into instructional technology and then education reform in both domestic and international arenas. AED branched out further to utilize mass media for health communication in developing countries and used that experience to build expertise in environmental communication, social marketing, and many other disciplines.
Today AED has become one of the world's foremost
human and social development organizations, operating
more than 250 programs. With a staff of more than
1,000 working throughout the world, AED draws on more
than 40 years of experience in building the capacity
of individuals, families, institutions, communities,
and nations to meet their own development needs.
